How I Approach Online Session Drumming

In the symphony of music, there exists a rhythm that transcends mere beats, a force that knits together melodies and harmonies into a seamless tapestry of sound. At the heart of this rhythm lies the art of session drumming - an often unsung hero in the realm of music production. In this blog post, we embark on a journey to unravel the essence of session drumming, exploring its significance, techniques, and the invaluable role it plays in shaping the music we love.

Understanding Online Session Drumming:

Online session drumming and remote session drummers are revolutionizing the traditional studio setting. Session drumming, at its core, is the art of providing percussive accompaniment to musical compositions, typically in a studio setting. They are the chameleons of rhythm, seamlessly transitioning from jazz to rock, from pop to metal, breathing life into each composition they touch.

Techniques and Skills:

Mastering the art of session drumming requires not only technical prowess but also a deep understanding of musical theory and composition. From intricate polyrhythms to subtle ghost notes, online session drummers and remote session drummers employ a myriad of techniques to create texture, depth, and groove within a song. Moreover, their keen sense of timing and dynamics allows them to navigate complex arrangements with finesse, ensuring that every beat serves the greater musical narrative.

Collaboration and Adaptability:

One of the hallmarks of a great session drummer is their ability to collaborate seamlessly with other musicians and producers, whether in a traditional studio or through online platforms. They must be adaptable, able to take direction and feedback while also bringing their own creative flair to the table. Whether laying down a steady backbeat or improvising a dynamic fill, session drummers work tirelessly to serve the vision of the artist, striving to elevate the music to new heights, even in remote settings.

The Legacy of Session Drumming:

Throughout the music history, session drummers have left an indelible mark on countless iconic recordings. From the legendary grooves of Bernard Purdie to the innovative rhythms of Steve Gadd, their contributions have shaped the sonic landscape of generations past and present. Yet, despite their immense influence, many session drummers remain nameless faces behind the studio glass, content to let their beats speak for themselves.

How I Operate as an Online Session Drummer:

After a discussion about the direction of your composition, I can get to work learning your tracks and applying the best possible "feel" I can for the music. My goal is to compliment your song, leaving my ego at the door. Once I record the drums, we can reference the track to see if you are happy with the feel of the piece. From there you can choose how you would like the music delivered to you, be it WAV, MP3, Mixed, Raw... Whatever.

My pricing ranges from $100 per track and up depending on how many takes, and the amount of post-production you want me to add.

Drum gear includes kits from Gretsch, and vintage Ludwigs, as well as a multitude of snare drums. Mics are Shure and Audix. Cymbals are a variety of Sabian.
