Drum Lessons

Online drum lessons, in-person drum lessons, does it matter? What’s the difference?

The current landscape of drum lessons is a tough one to navigate. With online drum lessons everywhere, how would someone choose an instructor to work with? In addition to droves of instructors floating around online, there’s also a myriad of membership options to self-educate through video drum lessons.

How do I decide what type of drum lessons are right for me?

In order to figure out how to proceed with the correct drum lessons for your needs, you’ll first have to assess your current ability level, and what you are looking to achieve through drum lessons. If you are a flat out beginner, with no knowledge at all I high recommend you seek out an instructor in person, and save your online drum lessons for when you get a bit more advanced.

There is no replacement for taking drum lessons in the flesh. Hands on teaching will always be the most powerful and successful method for learning how to play the instrument.

If you have already mastered some of the basics of drumming, then perhaps you can seek out online drum lessons, depending on what you are trying to learn. You see, the beauty of online drum lessons is you can hire experts in different areas of focus. If you want to expand your funk vocabulary, there’s an instructor for that. See what I mean?

Why drummers hire me for Drum Lessons

Many drummers hire me for drum lessons because they are looking to expand their hand technique. Usually, students that come to me for in person or online drum lessons are beginning to hit a wall with their technique. I am also highly sought after for traditional grip technique, in addition to approaching the drum set with creativity and fresh ideas.

An online drum lesson, or in person drum lesson with me is relatively the same. However, in person is always preferred, when possible, as I can physically show students how to execute various techniques, and literally use a hands-on approach to make adjustments to their technique.

What are my Specialties when it comes to Drum Lessons?

If you decide to take a drum lesson with me, we will thoroughly discuss your goals, and sketch out a plan to quickly get you leveled up in the area you seek. My goal is not to milk drum lessons as some other teachers do. Our time is our most precious asset, and wasting mine and yours does no good. Depending on what areas of focus you study with me, I have had some students confidently learn the techniques and become proficient at them after 2 lessons.

I’ve been sought out by drummers of all different walks of life for lots of different issues. Hand injuries, posture, technique, speed, creativity, All these things I can help with.

Traditional Grip Technique

This can be achieved either online or in person. Usually, we need 1-3 lessons before you can take my technique and implement it into your playing. My online course Mastering the Traditional Grip can also help speed this up, but I always recommend taking the drum lesson in addition.

Matched Grip Technique

My signature matched grip technique also takes 1-3 lessons to learn and can be done online as well.

Soloing

Taking a drum lesson with me for soloing is much better in person than online.

Creativity on the kit

Drum lessons revolving around creativity can sometimes be conceptualized online, but again are much better in person.

Fitness, Wellness and General Health as a Drummer

Perhaps not the most obvious type of drum lesson, but a very important one for that matter. I don’t know anyone other than myself as qualified in this area. Drummers need to be in top physical and mental condition, period. This is an area where I really shine and offer tremendous value. This is for serious drummers who want to make a career out of the instrument and realize what it will take on both the physical and mental side.

So as you can see, online drum lessons and in person drum lessons all have their place.

No matter which direction you choose, remember that you are making an investment in yourself. You should always choose a competent teacher who has your best interests in mind.

There are plenty of unqualified drum teachers floating around out there that will take your money and offer you zero value.

Feel free to reach out to me to discuss your drum lesson needs. If I feel I can help you I will. If I don’t think I can add any value to your playing, I will be upfront with you. It’s that simple.
